Season Shows

Director’s Note

WELCOME
On the eve of my departure from this role I’m looking back at the last 12 years with the fondest memories, and I look forward to the future with the greatest hope for Canberra Theatre Centre.

The season that the team here have put together for 2020 is full to the brim with excellent shows and I encourage you to take a look.

ENTERTAINMENT BY NUMBERS
Arts and entertainment venues make a great contribution to their communities. Some of this contribution, particularly connecting communities, cannot be easily measured. Other aspects of the contribution, specifically economic, can be measured, and we have never been more proud of how our numbers stack up.

In 2018/2019 we had more than275,000 people walk through the front door to see over 550 performances. This created $32.9 million in economic impact for Canberra, which is an increase of more than 10% over the previous year.

THE SEASON
Canberra audiences have proven their appetite for spectacular live entertainment of all genres and scale.

For lovers of stage drama, we have Belvoir with My Brilliant Career, and Malthouse Theatre with Wake In Fright. We also welcome back the inimitable Shake & Stir who return to Canberra with Animal Farm.

From the cutting edge of Australian theatre we have Griffin Theatre Company bringing us David Williamson’s latest work, Family Values. Also hot off the presses and ready for its premiere in 2020 is Ensemble Theatre Company’s A Broadcast Coup, written by ABC Radio talent and local legend Melanie Tait.

Monty Python’s Spamalot, The Choir of Man and Circa’s acrobatic masterpiece, Peepshow are all making an appearance to fill your cup with laughter and excitement.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Canberra Theatre Centre season without the return of season favourites, Bangarra Dance Theatre with yet another new and outstanding work, and Bell Shakespeare with The Comedy of Errors and the iconic Hamlet. This year we wave goodbye to comedy stalwarts The Wharf Revue, who in 2020 will wrap up their decades-long act with a Good Night and Good Luck show!

And finally, for the fans of the sensational and spectacular, Opera Australia is bringing us two works in 2020. We’re planning to marvel at Bizet’s Carmen, performed in French with English surtitles, and to sing along with Bran Nue Dae, Australia’s beloved homegrown musical.

To all the friends I’ve made in foyers over the years, thank you for being on this journey with me.

Don’t forget, if you have a millennial in your life that you would like to share a great night out with, theatregoers aged under 30 get excellent discounts on tickets to all season shows!
