Kate Miller-Heidke with The National Pops Orchestra
Friday 7 April 2017
Award winning singer/songwriter Kate Miller-Heidke, accompanied by The National Pops Orchestra, will present audiences with an orchestral re-imagining of Kate’s celebrated catalogue, featuring favourites from her album O Vertigo!, new material and songs from her most recent Helpmann Award® theatre performance The Rabbits.
This special concert event brings the Helpmann Award® winner to the Canberra Theatre stage for one night only on Friday 7 April 2017.
Perfectly timed with the recently released The Best Of Kate Miller-Heidke ::Act One, a collection of 37 songs in a two-disc package, the concert is the ultimate reflection of her brilliant career. Conducted by Iain Grandadge, Kate’s soaring vocals will also be accompanied by visuals from multi-award winning Australian director, Amy Gebhardt.
As a composer, Kate has been widely praised for her unique ability to combine moving, heartfelt songs and laugh out loud humour, as Sydney Symphony Orchestra states, “If you’ve seen The Rabbits – or any performance by Kate Miller-Heidke – you’ll know what an amazingly versatile musician and gifted creator she is. In her own words, The Rabbits is “an opera / musical / song-cycle / weird pop concert / puppet show / art-play.” Phew! She’s classically trained, yet her style crosses contemporary pop, folk and opera. Her songs are stamped with witty humour and poignant insight – always touching.”
With a voice that is nothing short of monumental, Kate comes armed with triple-octave pipes that effortlessly switch between screwball lyrebird calls to hymnal-quiet hushes, before breaking out into operatic, glass-breaking siren calls. This unique voice is accompanied by Canberra Theatre Centre’s very own, National Pops Orchestra, a 38 piece orchestra comprising of the top Canberra based classical musicians.
Together they present us with a concert that traverses the worlds of contemporary pop, folk and opera, showcasing the most incredible vocal pipes in the business.
