Officer Commanding/Music Director
Major Cole enlisted into the Australian Army in 1998 as a trombonist and his first posting was to the Australian Army Band – Sydney. Prior to joining the Army, Major Cole undertook tertiary studies at the University of Tasmania, obtaining an Associate Diploma of Music in 1993 and after a gap year spent in New Zealand, a Bachelor of Performing Arts degree in 1996. During this period, Major Cole also enjoyed much success as a trombone soloist, winning several state trombone soloist titles, the national trombone soloist title in 1997 and was also selected to be a member of Australian Brass from 1995-98.
In 2003, Major Cole was posted to the Defence Force School of Music (DFSM) in Melbourne as a corporal instructor. During this posting he was selected to attend the Band Officer Course in 2005 and upon graduation was awarded the Percy Grainger Prize for most outstanding student on the course. He was commissioned in 2006 and his first appointment was to the Australian Army Band – Sydney as Second in Command (2IC). This was followed by as posting to the Australian Army Band – Kapooka in 2009 as 2IC and subsequently to the Australian Army Band – Darwin as Officer Commanding from 2012-2015. In 2016 Major Cole returned to DFSM in the position of Officer Commanding/Senior Instructor, overseeing the training of Defence musicians from the newest trainees through to Band Officers. Major Cole was appointed as the Officer Commanding/Music Director of the Band of the Royal Military College in January 2019.
During his career Major Cole has undertaken various band deployments to Bougainville, East Timor and the Solomon Islands. He has also been selected for Army Band performances in Gallipoli, Turkey (2000), Tokyo, Japan (2004) and Basel, Switzerland (2011). Major Cole was awarded a Soldier’s Medallion for Exemplary Service in 2000 for making a significant contribution to band music arranging.
In 2008, Major Cole was selected to participate in Exchange Programme Long Look and was privileged to spend four months acting as Director of Music of the Band and Bugles of the Rifles based in Winchester, England. Through this exchange Major Cole had the opportunity and fortune to conduct this historic band at numerous military and public events throughout Germany, France, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, including events at Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle.
Major Cole is married to Kate, a Canberra local, and they enjoy good cafes, keeping fit and travel (when they have the chance).
