27 May – 4 June 2022

Telling the story of a cavalier social experiment to elevate a poor street vendor to the status of Lady by changing her elocution, George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion is as pertinent today as when it premiered in 1913. A sometimes scathing look at patriarchy and the entitlement of privilege, the play remains a favourite for the sparkle of its dialogue and the sheer juiciness of its characters. Bombastic man-child Higgins and his unflappably superior mother; Improbably brilliant Eliza and her philosopher-dustman father; Pickering, Higgins’ excitable but gallant colleague; Mrs Pearce, the very much put-upon housekeeper….these are roles that actors love to play. Tempo’s Pygmalion promises to be a warm, witty and thought-provoking feast for the mind and the heart.
