17–28 April 2018
Short+Sweet Canberra is returning to Canberra Theatre Centre this month, with another great line-up of 10 minute plays to make you laugh, cry or roll your eyes.
Once again, over a hundred artists – including writers, directors and actors – will be putting their talents to good use in the hope of an accolade and the chance to compete at the national festival in Sydney next year.
This year’s festival will be the second directed by local writer, Trevar Alan Chilver. Trevar has been participated in Short+Sweet festivals in Canberra, Sydney, Brisbane and Hollywood, and says, “The short play format demands something in character and plot that gets straight to the point. It’s a unique set of characteristics that make them exciting and challenging”.
Short+Sweet Theatre Canberra is at once local and eclectic. Plays are submitted from all over the world, and the festival director curates plays from local, interstate and overseas writers. Most actors and directors who participate come from Canberra, many travel from the capital region, and the festival has also welcomed actors and directors from Sydney and Melbourne.
The festival’s top 20 is split into two weeks, with 10 different plays each week. On the Saturday in between, there will be two performances of wildcard plays, and the festival ends with a Gala Final, showcasing the most successful plays from the festival.
Top 20 Week 1: 17–20 April, 7.30pm
Wildcards: 21 April, 2pm and 7.30pm
Top 20 Week 2: 24–27 April, 7.30pm
Gala Final: 28 April, 2pm and 7.30pm
