With a career spanning 20 albums, over 5000 gigs, and 42 years, Vince Jones is one of Australians most beloved musicians. Now, fresh from sold out shows at the 2016 Melbourne International Jazz Festival, Jones has invited a selection of the country’s finest jazz/rock musicians join him on the Canberra Theatre stage for this homage to Van Morrison’s extraordinary repertoire.
“[The show] captured the poetic beauty of the original” – Australian Stage
“This Scottish-born vocalist and trumpeter is up there in the top echelon of his craft” – Sydney Morning Herald
When The Beatles stopped touring and progressed to psychedelic rock and Dylan left folk and went electric, Van Morrison hired New York’s finest jazz musicians and recorded two of the classic albums of that golden era – Astral Weeks and Moondance. Both albums had an enormous impact on aspiring musicians and singers around the world. Australian Jazz legend, Vince Jones was one of them.
In fact, Astral Weeks was one of the first five records that he ever purchased, and has had a lasting influence on his musical career. “The songs Van wrote for that album were so open that with the right rhythm section those songs could take off and I believe he got it right with that rhythm section”.
The show, Van Morrison Masterpieces presents both albums in original tracking order. First, Van’s most acclaimed album, the magical Astral Weeks, a poetic, mercurial blend of jazz, folk and blues, and then the wonderful soul/jazz influenced Moondance.
A remarkable jazz interpreter, Vince Jones has set the benchmark for Australian jazz vocalist-musicians, and made a place for himself on the international stage with the gentle Celtic/jazz/blues influences in his voice coupled with the distinctive reserve and subtlety with which he plays the trumpet. The Astral Orchestra is led by Music Director, ARIA award winner, and Freedman Fellow, Matt McMahon.
